Norway in a Nutshell® is the country's most iconic self-guided tour, designed to showcase the best of Norway’s fjords and mountains in a single, seamless itinerary. It combines scenic train rides, a mountain bus journey, and a majestic fjord cruise into one continuous trip that can be completed in 9 to 14 hours. For my Norway in a Nutshell itinerary, I start in Bergen, take the Bergen Railway to Myrdal, where I will catch the Flam Railway deep into the Aurlandsfjord to the Fjord village of Flam. From Flam, I take a Fjord Cruise from Flam to Gudvangen through the the UNESCO-listed Naeroyfjord; once I arrive at Gudvangen, I take the Bus through the Nærøydalen valley to Voss, where I take a return train to Bergen.
You can book a pre-packaged ticket through providers like Fjord Tours that covers all logistics, or you can book each leg independently to save money. Norway in a Nutshell tours do not include meals, but Meals are not included, but there are cafes on the Bergen Railway and fjord cruise vessels, plus several restaurants in Flåm. During peak season, you should book your tours 3-6 months in advanced, as tours tend to sell out fast.

Can I reserve window seats on this tour?
Bergen Railway:
Tickets include standard seating. Standard Plus upgrades may be available on selected departures, but seat selection is not guaranteed.
Flåm Railway: Seating is open - choose any available seat when boarding. The Kjosfossen waterfall appears on the left when travelling uphill; the right side offers beautiful valley views. In many carriages, the top of the windows can be opened for photography.
Note: Both sides of the train provide spectacular views. You can move freely between carriages during the journey to photograph from large windows on both sides or enjoy a break in the café car of the train, with big windows for great views.
Will there be route changes in winter?
Due to the raw and unpredictable nature of the Nærøyfjord, route changes may happen at short notice during the winter season. In that case, the boat will run a return trip from Flåm, with the option of a connecting bus between Gudvangen and Flåm.
If your fjord cruise starts from Flåm:
Fjord Cruise round trip Flåm-Flåm: 09:30 or 14:45 (1.5 hours)
Buses to Gudvangen depart after cruise arrival: 11:05/16:20
If your fjord cruise starts from Gudvangen:
Bus to Flåm: 11:30 from bus stop H (20 min)
Fjord Cruise round trip Flåm-Flåm: 12:00 (2 hours)
This adapted route still captures the heart of the fjord experience: dramatic UNESCO scenery, pure winter magic, and an intimate journey through landscapes shaped by Norwegian winter.

The Flam Railway
The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, descending from the high-mountain station of Myrdal down to the fjord-side village of Flåm. This 20-kilometer (12.4-mile) line is a masterpiece of engineering, featuring a steep 5.5% gradient and 20 tunnels, 18 of which were painstakingly excavated by hand. The train travels from 867 meters (2,844 ft) above sea level at Myrdal to just 2 meters (6.5 ft) at Flåm in about 50 to 60 minutes. The train makes a dedicated five-minute photo stop at this massive waterfall, which is only accessible by rail. During the summer, you might see a "Huldra" (a mythical forest creature) dancing by the falls.
It is one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world. One tunnel even features a 180-degree turn inside the mountain to help the train manage the descent. The railway operates year-round. Summer offers lush greenery and roaring waterfalls, while winter transforms the valley into a snowy fairy-tale landscape. The carriages feature a nostalgic wooden interior with large windows designed for sightseeing.
Fjord Cruise
The UNESCO Fjord Cruise is a premier experience in Norway, taking you through the Nærøyfjord, a narrow and dramatic arm of the Sognefjord. This fjord, along with the Geirangerfjord, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005, recognized for its near-pristine natural beauty. The core journey runs between the villages of Flåm and Gudvangen, covering both the Aurlandsfjord and the narrowest parts of the Nærøyfjord. The one-way trip typically takes two hours. The fjord is only 250 meters wide at its narrowest point, with mountains rising nearly 1,800 meters straight from the water. Pass picturesque hamlets like Undredal, famous for its stave church and goat cheese, which are often only reachable by boat.

You can choose between modern, fully electric ships like the Future of The Fjords for a near-silent, eco-friendly ride, or more traditional passenger ferries. Adult tickets generally start at NOK 595 (~$58 USD) one-way during the peak season. Round-trip options combined with a shuttle bus are also available starting around NOK 960.
Bus Journey
A bus journey through the Nærøyfjorden Valley (Nærøydalen) is most commonly taken as a shuttle transfer between the fjord-side villages of Flåm and Gudvangen, or as part of the scenic route toward Voss. If you are booking this separately, you want to book Skyss Local bus 950. This local Skyss bus is timed to meet the fjord cruises in Gudvangen and continues to Voss, a roughly 50-minute journey. Historically, this bus drove down the world-famous Stalheimskleiva, a steep road with 13 hairpin bends. However, this specific section is currently closed to vehicle traffic due to maintenance. Most buses now travel through the modern Stalheim Tunnel, though some still stop at the Stalheim Hotel at the top for the iconic valley view. The Nærøydalen valley is a textbook U-shaped glacial valley with towering, sheer cliffs on both sides. The road passes through several long tunnels, including the Gudvanga Tunnel (11.4 km), which connects the Flåm and Gudvangen regions.
Voss
Voss is the "Adventure Capital of Norway," serving as a major hub between the Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord. Whether you are arriving by the scenic Bergen Line or transfering from a fjord cruise, it offers a mix of high-adrenaline sports and serene mountain landscapes. If you have extra time in Voss, I recommend taking the Vos Gondol up to Mount Hanguren; the Gondola is Northern Europe's largest and most modern mountain gondola starts right at the Voss train station. You can have dinner at the Hangurstoppen Restauraunt if that is something that intrigues you. Voss serves as a transit point between Gudvangen and Bergen, here you will catch the return train to Bergen.
Pro Tip: You don't have to take the Bergen Line back to Bergen from Voss, you can take R40, the Regional train that runs from Voss to Bergen, as they run more frequently.
Summary of Itenarary:
Start at Bergen Railway Station.
Take the Bergensbanen to Myrdal station, transfer for the Flam Railway or Flamsbana. This portion of the journey takes roughly 2 hours, although delays occur frequently.
Take the Flam Railway to the fjord-side village of Flåm. The Journey typically takes 50 to 60 minutes.
From Flam, Board an Eco friendly Fjord Cruise, which will take you on a 2 your journey though the UNESCO listed Naeroyfjord to Gudvangen.
From Gudvangen, board Skyss Bus 950 to Voss, this bus takes you through the Nærøydalen valley. The Bus ride takes about 55 minutes.
At Voss, walk from the Bus station to the train station, where you will catch a return train to Bergen. Train from Voss to Bergen takes between 1 hour and 7 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes by train depending on the train.
Why should you book Norway in a Nutshell?
The Norway in a Nutshell tour is highly recommended if you want to experience Norway's most iconic landscapes—including the Bergen Railway, the FlÃ¥m Railway, and a Nærøyfjord cruise—in a single, seamless journey. It is particularly valuable for travelers who are short on time or prefer a "one-stop-shop" booking experience rather than managing multiple transport connections independently. The tour operator, Fjord Tours , coordinates all tickets for trains, buses, and ferries into a single itinerary. If there are transport delays or issues, the company provides support that independent travelers would have to handle themselves.
It packs several of the world's top travel experiences—like the FlÃ¥m Railway , voted one of the world's most beautiful train rides and the Fjord cruise through the Naeroyfjord—into as little as one day.
