It later became an important center for international trade under Qing Dynasty rule and continued to flourish during Japanese colonial rule in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The district boasts several well-preserved colonial-era buildings, including Fort San Domingo, which was originally built by the Spanish in the 17th century and later reconstructed by the Dutch and British.
