LANGJOKULL ICE CAVE TOURS: "INTO THE GLACIERS"

Langjökull glacier ice cave tours offer a unique opportunity to journey inside Europe's second-largest glacier via the world's first and largest man-made ice tunnel. Located in western Iceland, these tours operate year-round—unlike natural ice caves that melt in summer—and typically involve driving across the glacial surface in massive, custom-built 8x8 monster trucks.

Inside, you will walk through vibrant blue ice corridors carved 40 meters below the surface, experiencing 1,000-year-old ice layers and even a built-in glacier chapel. Into the Glacier: This is the primary company that masterminded and maintains the spectacular man-made tunnel. You can book their Classic Ice Tunnel Tour departing directly from the Into the Glacier HĂşsafell Base or Klaki Basecamp. Prices start around 24,900 ISK (~$180 USD).  The temperature inside remains a constant 0°C (32°F). You must dress in warm thermal layers, waterproof outer shells, a hat, gloves, and sturdy hiking boots. Operators will supply the mandatory safety crampons for walking on the slippery ice floor.  If choosing a "meet-on-location" tour at Klaki Basecamp, note that it requires driving on rough gravel F-roads (specifically F550). This is strictly prohibited for standard 2WD rental cars; if you do not have a 4x4, always choose a departure out of HĂşsafell or Gullfoss instead.

Sleipnir Tours Iceland is known for navigating the rugged Arctic landscape with the world's largest custom-built 8x8 glacier monster trucks. Their trips depart right from the Gullfoss Waterfall upper parking lot and can be combined with Golden Circle sightseeing. Check out booking options via Sleipnir Tours. Arctic Adventures offers seamless multi-activity experiences, such as the Langjökull Ice Cave Experience from ReykjavĂk, handling all your city transfers, gear, and professional guides.  Unlike Vatnajökull's seasonal, completely organic caverns, this structure was safely engineered into the most stable part of the ice cap. This makes it perfectly stable and accessible even during the peak of summer.

Langjokull Ice Tunnel

The Langjökull Ice Tunnel is the world’s first and largest man-made ice cave structure. Located high up on Europe’s second-largest glacier, this massive engineering feat spans 500 meters (1,640 feet) and sits roughly 40 meters below the glacial surface. Unlike natural ice caves that fill with water and melt during warmer months, the tunnel remains structurally stable, cold, and open to visitors all year round. The inside temperature remains a steady 0°C (32°F) regardless of whether it is July or January. You must wear multiple warm layers, a windproof outer jacket, thick socks, gloves, and a hat.  Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended. Upon entering the tunnel, your guides will distribute safety crampons (metal spikes for your shoes) to prevent slipping on the ice floor. The tunnel cannot be visited independently. You must book a guided tour departing from either HĂşsafell Base, Klaki Basecamp, Gullfoss, or via a full-day tour coach from ReykjavĂk.

Key Structural Highlights Inside the Tunnel

Vibrant Blue Ice: As you walk deeper into the glacier, the ice transforms from a snowy white into a glowing, translucent deep blue. This happens because centuries of immense pressure have squeezed all the oxygen bubbles out of the ice layers.

The Volcanic Ash Band: You can clearly see dark lines running horizontally through the ice walls. These are bands of volcanic ash from historical eruptions, acting as a natural timeline frozen inside the glacier.

The Subterranean Chapel: Deep inside the structure lies a fully carved ice chapel, complete with frozen ice seating and an altar. It is a fully functional venue used for unique destination weddings and acoustic concerts.

Lighted Pathways: The floors are smoothed out for safe walking, and the tunnels are illuminated by low-heat LED lights recess-mounted into the ice walls to highlight the interior textures without melting the structures.

Husafell Base

The HĂşsafell Base is the main, easily accessible meeting point and logistics hub for the iconic Into the Glacier ice tunnel tours. Located in the historic HĂşsafell service area, this base features a ticket office, paved parking, a hotel, and dining facilities, making it the perfect departure point if you are driving a standard 2WD rental car or arriving by tour bus.  You can grab a meal or warm drink at the HĂşsafell Bistro or the upscale restaurant located inside Hotel HĂşsafell. There is a self-service gas station and electric vehicle charging points directly on-site before you venture deeper into the highlands. You will park your rental vehicle at the main, paved parking lot outside the Into the Glacier office. A specialized shuttle bus will pick you up directly from HĂşsafell and drive you inland along the gravel mountain roads to the edge of the glacier at Klaki Basecamp.  At Klaki, you will board a massive, custom-engineered 8x8 military monster truck with giant wheels designed to safely traverse the snowy, icy terrain up the cap of the Langjökull glacier directly to the tunnel entrance.

Custom-built 8x8 Monster Trucks

The custom-built 8x8 glacier monster trucks used on Langjökull are highly specialized engineering marvels designed to safely traverse deep snow pack, thick ice, and gaping crevices. Rather than standard commercial vehicles, these mechanical beasts are built utilizing heavily modified multi-axle military, industrial, and heavy-duty transport platforms.  The trucks use custom-engineered tires ranging from 65 to 78 inches in diameter. To maintain optimal traction and prevent sinking into soft snow, the drivers use a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) to drop tire pressures down as low as 4 psi. This wide footprint creates low ground pressure and even allows the vehicle to safely glide over crevasses up to 2 meters wide.

To combat the jagged, constantly moving surface of the glacier, every single tire features an independent suspension setup. This creates a surprisingly smooth, stable, and vibration-free ride for passengers inside. Despite their rugged exterior, the interiors resemble a modern tour bus. They are fitted with panoramic skyline windows for sweeping highland views, high-efficiency heating systems, Wi-Fi, and an onboard eco-friendly toilet system.

Into the Glacier’s 8x8 Fleet

The Into the Glacier team operates a fleet of heavily modified MAN KAT1 8x8 trucks.

Military Origin: These massive vehicles were originally built as former NATO mobile missile launchers.

Massive Scale: Each completed passenger vehicle weighs roughly 20 tonnes.

Passenger Conversion: The original military equipment was replaced with a spacious, fully insulated, and heated passenger cabin that sits high above the ice.

Sleipnir Tours’ 8x8 Fleet

Operating primarily from Gullfoss, Sleipnir Tours designed and fabricated "Sleipnir 1"—widely regarded as the largest glacier truck in the world.

The Chassis: These units utilize a heavy-duty Tatra truck base combined with a powerful 530 to 630 horsepower DAF engine.

Unprecedented Dimensions: Sleipnir 1 measures 15 meters (49 feet) long and can safely carry up to 47 passengers plus crew.

Classic Ice Tunnel Tour

The Into the Glacier Classic Ice Tunnel Tour is the flagship excursion that takes you deep inside the Langjökull ice cap. Operating year-round, it is widely considered the most accessible and family-friendly ice experience in Iceland. The entire adventure lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours when departing from HĂşsafell or Klaki Basecamp. Direct reservations can be secured online through the official Into the Glacier Classic Tour Booking Page or authorized operators like Arctic Adventures. Because the tunnel is dug into a highly stable, high-altitude section of the ice cap, the experience inside remains a reliable 0°C (32°F) all year long.

However, the logistics outside change based on the month: During the summer season (June 1 – October 15), the mountain tracks clear up. If you own a rugged 4x4 rental car, you can choose to bypass the HĂşsafell shuttle bus and drive straight to Klaki Basecamp to board the monster truck directly. In the Winter Season (October 16 – May 31),  the highland F-roads completely close due to heavy snowpack. All self-drive tours must depart exclusively from HĂşsafell, using the company's guided winter transport vehicles to navigate the highlands safely.

Step-by-Step Tour Itinerary

The Meeting Hub: You check in at the Into the Glacier HĂşsafell Base (or Klaki Basecamp in peak summer). Here, you can borrow extra weather-resistant snowsuits or overshoes if needed.

The Glacier Ascent: You board a modified 8x8 military monster truck. The rugged drive up the snowcap takes roughly 30 minutes in the summer and up to 75 minutes during harsh winter weather.

The Ice Subterranean Walk: You enter the 500-meter-long engineered tunnel system. Guides hand out safety footwear crampons. You spend about 1 hour walking through blue-lit hallways, viewing volcanic ash layers frozen in time, and exploring the built-in ice chapel.

The Return Journey: After leaving the ice cave, you strip off your crampons, load back into the monster truck, and enjoy a traditional Icelandic treat (hot chocolate milk and a sweet snack) on the ride down.

Snowmobile Combo

A Langjökull Snowmobile Combo Tour pairs the high-speed rush of zooming across an open Arctic ice cap with a subterranean exploration of an ice cave or tunnel. This variation replaces the passive monster truck commute with active driving, allowing you to pilot your own snowmobile directly over the glacier's surface to the cave entrance. It is one of Iceland's most popular multi-adventure packages. To pilot a snowmobile, you must present a valid physical driver’s license from your home country. Digital copies or photographs are rarely accepted.  Children cannot drive, but they can join as passengers sitting behind an adult. The minimum age for a passenger is 6 years old with Mountaineers of Iceland or 8 years old with Into the Glacier.  Glacier weather shifts instantly. If high winds or blinding blizzards occur, snowmobiling will be canceled or delayed for safety reasons. If a cancellation happens, you are typically offered a full refund or a seat on an alternative monster truck tour.

Step-by-Step Experience Breakdown

Highland Super-Truck Transit: You meet your guides at your chosen hub. A rugged 4x4 mountain truck carries you from the base camp across bumpy highland terrain to the snowmobile staging center at the foot of the glacier.

Safety Briefing and Gear Up: Guides supply you with insulated protective overalls, gloves, a balaclava, and a safety helmet. First-time riders receive clear, simple instructions on steering and braking.

The Glacier Rush: You embark on a 40-to-60-minute snowmobile trek across the smooth, high-altitude slopes of Langjökull. Tours typically assign two people per snowmobile, with opportunities to swap drivers halfway through the trip.

The Cave Stopover: You park your sleds at the mouth of the ice cave. You will trade your helmet for a headlamp and spend roughly an hour exploring the glowing blue underbelly of the ice cap before riding back to the base camp.

Full-Day Day Trip (from Reykjavik)

A full-day day trip from Reykjavík to the Langjökull ice cave is a comprehensive 9-to-11-hour excursion that eliminates the need for navigating rough highland roads or renting a 4x4. Operating year-round, these tours combine city transfers with a scenic route through western Iceland's historical landmarks, waterfalls, and geothermal fields before taking you high up onto the ice cap. Arctic Adventures: Operates a popular small-group version called the Langjökull Ice Cave Experience From Reykjavík featuring English-speaking local guides, hotel pick-up options, and full gear. Reykjavík Excursions runs daily large-coach transfers that connect seamlessly with the monster trucks at Húsafell. Check schedules via Reykjavík Excursions.

Standard Full-Day Itinerary

08:00 AM – 08:30 AM | ReykjavĂk Departure: Direct pick-up from designated city bus stops or central hotels.

10:30 AM | Deildartunguhver Hot Springs: A short sightseeing stop at Europe's most powerful geothermal hot spring, pumping out boiling water at a constant 97°C (206°F).

11:15 AM | Hraunfossar & Barnafoss Waterfalls: You will explore these unique waterfalls where clear glacial water flows directly out from underneath a massive, ancient lava field.

12:15 PM | Lunch Break at HĂşsafell: A stop at Into the Glacier HĂşsafell Base for a quick lunch (at your own expense) and cold-weather gear check.

01:00 PM – 03:30 PM | Glacier Monster Truck & Tunnel Walk: You board the 8x8 giant truck to climb the snowy mountain paths, step into the deep blue-lit ice tunnels for a 1-hour walking tour, and safely descend back down.

06:30 PM – 07:00 PM | ReykjavĂk Return: Drop-off back at your original city location.

Key Group and Age Guidelines

Age Limits: While self-drive tours have no minimum age, day trips starting from ReykjavĂk require children to be at least 6 years old to manage the long driving itinerary.

Accessibility: Luggage and heavy bags cannot be taken on the glacier vehicles, but they can be safely left inside the locked hold of the tour bus at HĂşsafell.

Why Visit the Langjokull Ice Tunnel

The Langjökull Ice Tunnel is a bucket-list destination because it is the world's first and largest man-made ice tunnel, stretching 500 meters (1,640 feet) through a living glacier. Unlike Iceland's natural ice caves, which are unpredictable, prone to collapse, and completely inaccessible outside of winter, this engineered masterpiece is stable and open 365 days a year. As you descend 40 meters (130 feet) beneath the glacier's surface, you can look closely at distinct black lines in the ice. These are authentic volcanic ash layers from historic Icelandic eruptions trapped in time.

The deeper you walk into the tunnel, the more the ice shifts from snowy white to a glowing, brilliant blue. This occurs because the intense weight of the glacier has compressed all the oxygen bubbles out of the ice over centuries. Deep inside the structure is a fully functional ice chapel featuring hand-carved ice benches and an altar. It regularly hosts weddings and intimate musical performances due to its incredible, crisp acoustics. Half the adventure is just getting there. To reach the tunnel's entrance, you get to ride across the massive snow cap in a giant, custom-built 8x8 military monster truck with tires inflated to low pressure to glide smoothly over snow and crevasses. If you want a more thrilling commute than the passenger truck, you can easily pair your tunnel ticket with a snowmobile tour, allowing you to speed across the open ice cap right to the cave entrance.  Because the structure is monitored daily by structural engineers, it has flat, smooth pathways and recessed LED lighting. There is no minimum age requirement for self-drive visitors, making it a perfect glacier experience for young children and seniors.

THE EVOLUTION AND HISTORY OF TSEUN WAN

Tsuen Wan’s transformation is one of Hong Kong’s most compelling urban narratives—a journey from pirate-infested shallows to a high-density, transit-connected “City in the Sky.” Archaeological evidence suggests settlement in  Tsuen Wan as early as 2,000 years ago. Originally called Tsin Wan (“Shallow Bay”), later Tsak Wan (“Pirate Bay”) due to rampant piracy during the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the Southern Song Dynasty, loyal villagers built fortified walls in Shing Mun Valley to resist the invading Yuan army. In 1669, Lo Wai, the oldest Hakka village in Tsuen Wan, was established by five family clans; it remains a cultural touchstone surrounded by temples and heritage sites.                               The government designated Tsuen Wan as a satellite town during the 1950s and 60s, and thus it quickly became a textile hub, attracting factories and workers. In 1961, expansion into Tsuen Wan New Tow...
