A DAY TRIP TO TEMPOZAN HARBOR VILLAGE + UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN

Visiting Osaka Bay Area and Universal Studios Japan (USJ) offers a blend of nature, entertainment, and cultural experiences that appeal to travelers of all ages. Tempozan Harbor Village offers a laid-back morning with scenic views and marine wonders, while USJ provides high-energy entertainment for the afternoon and evening. The short distance between the two allows for a seamless day trip. Both spots offer unique attractions that captivate kids, teens, and adults alike. This combination ensures a well-rounded, action-packed day showcasing the best of Osaka! 

Here’s a suggested itinerary for a fun-packed day visiting Tempozan Harbor Village and Universal Studios Japan in Osaka:

Start the itinerary at  Tempozan Harbor Village; to get to Tempozan Harbor Village take the Green Chuo line to Osakako Station, from Osakako Station, it’s about a 5–10 minute walk to Tempozan Harbor Village. Follow signs for the Osaka Aquarium (Kaiyukan), as it’s a key landmark in the area. 

9:00 AM – Breakfast near Tempozan Harbor Village

Find a place to eat breakfast on the way to Tempozan Harbor Village, there are many restraunts and cafes on the walk from the Station to Tempozan Harbor Village:

I would suggest 9 Borden Coffee, a coffee shop that is conveniently located in between the station and Tempozan Harbor Village.

10:00 AM – Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Explore one of the world’s largest aquariums. Spend about 2 hours marveling at marine life, including whale sharks, sea otters, and jellyfish. The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the largest and most renowned aquariums in the world, located in the Tempozan Harbor Village area of Osaka. It’s an iconic destination that offers visitors a chance to explore the wonders of marine life in an immersive and educational setting. The aquarium is designed to take you on a journey around the Pacific Ocean, focusing on the diverse ecosystems of the “Ring of Fire.” Home to a majestic whale shark, this enormous tank holds 5,400 tons of water and serves as the centerpiece of the aquarium. Explore environments like the Aleutian Islands, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Japan Forest. Each tank represents a specific region’s ecosystem and wildlife. Touch pools allow visitors to interact with creatures like sharks and rays, offering a tactile connection to marine life. In the evening, the aquarium transforms with special lighting that mimics the ocean at night, creating a magical atmosphere. It's perfect for visitors of all ages, with easy-to-navigate pathways and engaging displays for kids and adults alike. Aquarium is open from 10:00 AM to 8:00PM, with last entry at 7:00PM, I recommend purchasing tickets ahead of time so you can skip the line.

12:15 PM – Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel

Enjoy panoramic views of Osaka Bay from this 112.5-meter-tall Ferris wheel. A ride takes about 15 minutes. The Ferris wheel stands at 112.5 meters tall and offers panoramic views of Osaka Bay, the city skyline, and landmarks such as the Osaka Aquarium and the surrounding harbor area. On clear days, you can even see Mount Rokko in the distance. The fully enclosed gondolas protect you from the elements, so you can enjoy the ride in any weather, whether it’s sunny, rainy, or chilly. The Ferris wheel is beautifully illuminated at night, making it a romantic and visually striking experience. The changing lights add an extra layer of charm after sunset. The Ferris wheel moves slowly, giving you ample time to soak in the views and take photos from the top. The Ferris Wheel is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with the last ride at 9:45 PM, though Hours may vary slightly depending on the season or special events. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth located at the base of the Ferris wheel or on their website if you want to ride at a specific time.

12:30 PM – Tempozan Marketplace & Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho

Tempozan Marketplace and Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho are located at Tempozan Harbor Village, near the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel. Together, they offer a delightful combination of shopping, dining, and entertainment. Stroll through the marketplace for souvenirs and snacks. Visit the retro-style food court, Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho, for a quick bite. Tempozan Marketplace is a multi-purpose facility that combines shopping, dining, and family-friendly attractions.  The marketplace offers casual dining spots, cafes, and international food stalls, catering to all tastes. Shop at a variety of stores selling unique souvenirs, local products, and Japanese specialty goods. 

Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho, a retro-style food theme park is located inside Tempozan Marketplace, offering a nostalgic journey through Osaka's culinary history. The space is designed to resemble a 1960s Osaka streetscape, complete with period-style decor and signage. A paradise for food lovers, featuring a wide variety of Osaka specialties like Takoyaki (octopus balls), Okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), Kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), Ramen, and more! Most stalls offer dishes in small portions, so you can sample multiple items without breaking the bank. The laid-back setting makes it ideal for families and groups to enjoy a casual meal.  Located inside Tempozan Marketplace, it is typically open from 11:00 AM–9:00 PM, but individual shop and restaurant hours may vary.

1:30 PM – Head to Universal Studios Japan (USJ)


It’s a 15-minute taxi ride or about 30 minutes via public transport from Tempozan Harbor Village to USJ, we will be spending the afternoon at Universal Studios Japan. The Captain Line Ferry is a scenic ferry service that operates between Universal Studios Japan (USJ) and the Tempozan Harbor Village area in Osaka, making it a convenient and enjoyable way to travel between two of the city's major attractions. The ferry departs from Tempozan Harbor Village and arrives at Universal City Port near USJ in about 10 minutes. This makes it a quick and easy option. The Captain Line Ferry offers great views of Osaka Bay and the surrounding skyline. It’s a great way to enjoy the scenery and get a different perspective of the city. The ferries are comfortable, with both indoor and outdoor seating, allowing you to relax and enjoy the breeze as you cross the water. The Captain Line Ferry typically runs from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the last ferry departure around 5:30 PM.

1:45 PM – Enter Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is one of the most popular theme parks in Japan, and it offers a unique blend of thrilling attractions, immersive themed zones, and world-class entertainment that makes it a must-visit for families, movie fans, and thrill-seekers alike. Purchase tickets online beforehand to save time. Use Express Passes for popular attractions if possible. USJ features some of the most well-known movie franchises, bringing them to life with immersive rides and experiences that allow you to step into the worlds of your favorite films, such as Harry Botter, Jurassic Park, Despicable Me, and Super Mario. Each zone in USJ offers a unique theme, taking visitors to different worlds and cultures. Some of the standout zones include New York and San Francisco, Amity Village, and Sesame Street Fun World. USJ is known for using state-of-the-art technology to create immersive and realistic experiences. With cutting-edge effects, high-quality animatronics, and virtual reality, many of the attractions make you feel like you’re truly part of the action. Take the Captain line ferry back to the Tempozan Harbor Village before the last ferry, make sure you do not miss the last ferry, which is a 5:30 PM.
