Day Trips from Quebec City

The best day trips from Québec City allow you to seamlessly transition from historic European charm to massive glacial valleys, thundering waterfalls, and sprawling agricultural islands within a 15- to 45-minute drive. Whether you are looking for local foodie trails, outdoor adventures, or deep historical excursions, the countryside surrounding the city is incredibly accessible. The Flavor & Faith Corridor, or North Coast is the single most efficient route for first-time visitors. By driving east along Route 138, you can bundle three iconic landmarks into one seamless, half-day or full-day itinerary without backtracking. Attractions to visit along that route include Montmorency Falls, Île d'Orléans and Basilique Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. If you want to experience Canada's rugged backcountry, you do not have to travel far. Destinations such as Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier and Canyon Sainte-Anee offer dramatic mountain gaps and dense boreal forests right on the city's doorstep. For an immersive look at regional history or a slow-paced afternoon exploring artist communities, look to the north-west or further down the St. Lawrence River like Wendake or Baie-Saint-Paul. Here are some day trips you can take from Quebec City if you want to step away from the city life.

Route 138 Iconic Attractions

This specific section of Route 138 East is historically known as the Cote-de-Beaupré corridor, and it makes for the most seamless and rewarding 1-day road trip from Québec City. By following this highway along the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, you can hit all three destinations in a logical, geographical progression without doubling back. If you have an extra hour before the Basilica, stop at the Albert Gilles Copper Art Museum right off Route 138. He is the master artisan who actually hand-carved the towering copper doors of the Basilica.  Keep your parking receipt from Montmorency Falls; on certain seasonal days, it can grant discounts or access to other network parks.

Montmorency Falls

Located 15 minutes east of downtown, Montmorency Falls stands at 83 meters (272 feet) tall, these dramatic falls are a striking 30 meters higher than Niagara Falls. You can cross a suspension bridge directly over the roaring crest, zip-line across the basin, or ride a panoramic cable car.  Skip the strenuous 487-step cliffside staircase unless you want a heavy workout; take the Montmorency Cable Car up and walk across the top instead.

 Île d'Orléans

Located 15 minutes from the city center, just across the suspension bridge from the falls sits the "cradle of French civilization in North America". Driving the 67-kilometer loop around this agricultural island reveals centuries-old stone farms, vineyards, and local artisans. aste ice cider at local orchards, sample blackcurrant liqueurs at Cassises Monna & Filles, and grab a famous lobster roll at Chez Mag. Rent an e-bike from Quebec Aventure Tours if you prefer to pedal the shoreline.

Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré

Located 25 minutes east of downtown Quebec City, it was one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in North America, this massive Romanesque-Revival basilica is famous for its intricate mosaics, 240 stained glass windows, and towering hand-beaten copper doors.  Even if you aren't religious, the colossal architecture and the wall of crutches left behind by those claiming miraculous healings are visually mesmerizing.

The Great Wilderness Outings

If you want to experience Canada’s legendary, rugged backcountry, you do not have to travel far from the city center. The great wilderness outings from Québec City offer dramatic mountain plateaus, 500-meter-deep glacial valleys, and rushing rivers within a 25- to 45-minute drive north or east along the Route 138 corridor.

Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier

Located 45 minutes north of Quebec City via Route 175, Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier is a spectacular mountain plateau cut by a 550-meter-deep glacial valley. In the summer and autumn, it's a paradise for hiking over 100 km of trails, kayaking, and spotting wildlife like moose and beavers. In winter, it shifts into a snowshoeing and backcountry skiing hub. Hike the Sentier Les Loups for an unforgettable, sweeping view of the valley's sheer cliffs. If you don't have a car, book a daily shuttle from downtown through local outfitter Quatre Natures.

Canyon Sainte-Anne

Located 35 minutes east of the city, Canyon Sainte-Anne is a breathtaking, steep rock canyon carved out by a 74-meter-high waterfall. The park features three giant footbridges suspended high above the gorge, a giant zipline, and a thrilling via ferrata rock-climbing circuit.  It is much less congested than Montmorency, and the family-friendly pathways make it highly accessible for kids and casual walkers.

Cultural Heritage & Scenic Villages

The best cultural heritage and scenic village day trips from Québec City allow you to step directly back in time. Within a 20- to 70-minute drive, you can transition from the birthplace of French civilization to self-governed Indigenous lands, historic shipping towns, and vibrant artist colonies tucked into a massive meteorite crater.

Wendake

Located 20 minutes northwest of downtown Quebec City, Wendake is an enclave within the city limits that serves as the self-governed territory of the Huron-Wendat Nation. It provides an immersive journey into Indigenous history, crafts, and food. Visit the Site Traditionnel Huron Onhoüa Chetek8e to step inside a traditional longhouse, then book a dinner at La Traite to sample upscale, game-focused indigenous cuisine.

Baie-Sainte-Paul

Located 1hour and 10 minutes northeast of Quebec City, nestled in the dramatic Charlevoix crater region, this charming maritime village is the birthplace of Cirque du Soleil. It boasts one of the highest concentrations of contemporary art galleries in Canada, alongside trendy farm-to-table bistros.  Skip the drive entirely and book a ticket on the scenic Train de Charlevoix, which hugs the cliffs of the St. Lawrence River all the way from Québec City to the village center.

Montmorency Falls/ Île d'Orléans/Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Day Trip

Montmorency Falls: Drive 15 minutes northeast out of downtown Québec City directly on Route 138 East. Park at the bottom lot and take the Montmorency Cable Car to the top to cross the suspension bridge. This beats walking up the 487 wet steps early in the morning.  Getting here right as it opens allows you to beat the heavy tour buses and catch the morning sunlight hitting the 83-meter crest.

Île d'Orléans: From the falls, hop back on Route 138 for just 2 minutes, then take the immediate exit for the Pont de l'Île d'Orléans (the large suspension bridge crossing the river).  Once you cross, you will turn onto Route 368, which loops the entire island. Give yourself roughly 3 to 4 hours here to drive through the historic villages and feast.  Grab lunch on the island.

Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré: Cross back over the island bridge, merge directly onto Route 138 East, and drive 20 minutes further down the coast. Explore the massive, jaw-dropping neo-Romanesque Sanctuaire Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. Even if you just view the magnificent gold-leaf mosaics, the 240 stained-glass windows, and the giant copper doors, it is architecturally awe-inspiring. On your 25-minute drive back to Québec City, exit Route 138 to briefly drive down Avenue Royale (Route de la Nouvelle-France). This is one of the oldest heritage roads in Canada, lined with 17th-century stone farmhouses.

Glacial Valleys & Living Indigenous Culture

Deep Wilderness at Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier: Head 45 minutes straight north of downtown via Highway 175. Arrive at this jaw-dropping 550-meter-deep glacial valley. To experience the scale of the cliffs, hike the Sentier Les Loups (11 km, steep but spectacular). For a casual, flat alternative, walk the Sentier de la Rivière right along the rushing water.

Immersive Heritage in Wendake: Head 30 minutes south from the park back toward the city limits. Step into Wendake, the self-governed territory of the Huron-Wendat Nation. Tour the Huron-Wendat Museum and walk inside a towering, authentic longhouse. Take a peaceful stroll to the roaring Kabir Kouba waterfall right in the village. Book a table at La Traite. This award-winning restaurant serves upscale Indigenous gastronomy featuring northern game, wild mushrooms, and forest botanicals.

What makes these Day trips from Quebec City Special

What makes the day trips surrounding Québec City uniquely special is their extreme geographical contrast, deep cultural preservation, and immediacy. You do not have to drive for hours to escape into completely different worlds. In many major North American cities, reaching true wilderness requires hours of navigating urban sprawl. In Québec City, you can stand in front of a 17th-century stone cathedral, hop in a car, and be deep inside a 550-meter-deep glacial valley (Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier) or standing next to a waterfall taller than Niagara Falls (Canyon Sainte-Anne) in under 45 minutes. The transition from historic European cobblestones to raw Canadian backcountry is practically instantaneous.

These trips offer immersion into distinct chapters of North American history that are actively preserved, rather than just static museum exhibits. Because of the rich microclimates created by the St. Lawrence River and ancient meteorite craters (like Charlevoix), the regions surrounding the city are an agricultural goldmine. Day-tripping here is highly culinary. You can drive a single loop around Île d'Orléans or visit the maritime villages and sample globally recognized ice ciders, blackcurrant liqueurs, farm-fresh cheeses, and locally forged forest botanicals directly from the artisans who made them.

A GUIDE TO NAVIGATING ELEVATED WALKWAYS IN CENTRAL

Central’s elevated walkway system is a multi-level pedestrian network that stitches together office towers, malls, civic venues, and transit hubs. It’s more than just infrastructure—it’s a spatial narrative of Hong Kong’s verticality, efficiency, and adaptive reuse. Began in the 1970s with connections between Connaught Centre (now Jardine House) and the General Post Office. To separate pedestrian and vehicular flows, enhance walkability, and create climate-controlled movement across the district. A mix of enclosed bridges, open-air decks, and covered arcades—each reflecting its era’s design ethos. Here is a guide to navigating the elevated walkways of Central Hong Kong—one that blends practical orientation with architectural symbolism, urban flow, and civic storytelling.                                Key Zones & Wayfinding Anchors | IFC to Exchange Square | IFC Mall, Airport Express, One & Two Excha...
